CHILD LABOR PREVENTION PROJECT ENDED THE INITIATIVE TO BE TAKEN OVER BY THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES

CHILD LABOR PREVENTION PROJECT ENDED THE INITIATIVE TO BE TAKEN OVER BY THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Though in Azerbaijan the issue of the abuse of child labor is not extremely apparent, we still meet such parents, particularly in the southern regions, that do not send their children to school and engage them in various types of businesses, predominantly in family business. Though, to some extent, a child should be involved in labor, this should not, in any way, hinder the child’s school attendance. Relevant authorities and NGOs take care that all children in Azerbaijan receive proper free education as provided by the government. However, more efforts are required to establish full compliance in practice.

Hence, financial and technical assistance was provided to Beylagan Youth Enlightenment and Social Development Public Union (www.facebook.com/bgmsiib) to initiate and implement the project aimed at the absolute prevention of child labor in 4 south-western districts – Aghjabadi, Beylagan, Aghdam and Fuzuli.

The Project commenced on June 1, 2013 and ended on December 10, 2013. The core goal of the Project was to ensure the awareness of parents and children of the significance and benefit of education. Moreover, the Project took an aim to draw the attention of the governmental bodies, as well as private sector companies through focused workshops and round tables. Students also acquired information about the concept of child rights and who they could address in case their own rights were violated or they witnessed misbehavior in respect of another child.

At the round table held on the International Child Protection Day the representatives of the local governmental and non-governmental bodies were engaged in exchange of experiences and discussion of the methods of child labor prevention. The participants of the round table once more assembled at the end of the Project to sign the Memorandum on the activities to be taken after the Project to ensure continuous attention to this key issue.

Special booklets and posters on child labor and child rights were developed and distributed to the residents of the 4 districts. In general, 15 seminars were conducted with the participation of both parents and students – around 500 persons.

The Painting Contest “Let’s Take Care of Every Child” was also organized within the frame of the Project which attracted 50 students from Aghjabedi schools. The Contest Award Ceremony was broadcast by local TV and media. It is interesting that though the Contest did not stress out child labor prevention, most of the submitted paintings emphasized the importance of education and condemned child labor.

Do not forget that those who exploit child labor are both legally and morally liable!
