“Youth in Protection of Environment” Enlightened a Number of Young People in Shamkir, Ganja and Neighboring Districts

The Project “Youth in Protection of Environment” was initiated with the objective to involve the youth in the protection of the environment in Shamkir, Ganja & neighboring districts. The Project, which lasted during May-July 2013, was implemented in cooperation with “Odlar Yurdu” Youth Public Union, headquartered in Ganja and functioning in the western region of the country.

Regarding that in regions the youth’s awareness of environmental sustainability is weak, special booklets and posters were developed and distributed to not just schoolchildren but also other young residents of the region.

The 2-day training of trainer arranged for 20 active university students on the topics most important for the communities of the western regions was a pre-condition for conducting open days at schools. The future trainers also acquired skills on how to deliver training and attract audience’s interest, and not just with regard to environmental issues. Those trained young people then managed open environment days at high schools in the region delivering interactive presentations and answering the questions of curious school audiences.

During the open days at schools the key objective was to enhance the knowledge and awareness of young people about environmental sustainability, to increase the youth’s attention to simple matters that adversely affect our environment and involve them in actual steps to contribute to the protection of the environment in more global terms.

In total, 6 districts (Ganja, Shamkir, Tartar, Tovuz, Samukh, Aghdam), including 8 secondary school and 2 children’s homes, were directly involved in the Project. During the seminars held at those institutions 400 schoolchildren got acquainted with how and why to take care of our environment.

Along with the distribution of the booklets prepared specifically for this Project, eye-catching posters with an environmental message were also stuck on the walls of 42 schools in the region to remind the importance of environmental protection in longer term.

To have a broader impact, 3 video materials on the techniques of tree planting, environmental protection related messages uttered during the conducted training sessions, and engaging environmental care activities were prepared and posted on electronic resources. The tree planting and cleaning day videos were captured during the relevant activities carried out within the Project in Ganja. The video files are available on

We can’t say that we did not know about it, we knew the relevant rules. But you have showed us how we should follow these rules”, a participant schoolboy.
